MURRIETA - A Murrieta man was convicted today of voluntary manslaughter and assault charges in the death of his girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter. Jurors rejected first- and second-degree murder charges, instead finding 30-year-old Ryan Christopher Mickey guilty of the lesser counts of voluntary manslaughter and assault on a child causing death. Members of the six-man, six-woman panel, which reached the verdict after about eight days of deliberations, declined to speak about the case afterward. Mickey faces a maximum of 36 years to life behind bars -- 25 years to life on the assault count and 11 for manslaughter -- when he is sentenced April 9. Kerianne Bradley died on Feb. 5, 2006, at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego, a day after paramedics were summoned to the home that her mother shared with Mickey on Broken Arrow Way. Mickey was performing CPR on the child when medics arrived. When the first verdict was read, the toddler's mother, Jennifer, and father, Nick, thought Mickey had been acquitted of all charges and ran out of the courtroom in anger. When they learned from other family members that Mickey had been found guilty on the assault and manslaughter charges, their tears of rage quickly turned to tears of joy. "It was an emotional roller coaster,'' Nick Bradley said outside court. Jennifer Bradley said her family and friends were "banking on'' Mickey suffering in prison. The prosecution contended that Mickey beat the child after learning that his then-girlfriend was planning to reunite with her husband, Nick, when he was released from prison. The defense maintained that the child had been hurt earlier in the week, and her condition deteriorated until she went into cardiac arrest. Brown told jurors that the youngster's abdominal and facial injuries occurred while Mickey was trying to resuscitate her. The San Diego County deputy medical examiner who performed the autopsy testified the child suffered head and abdominal injuries consistent with a beating. Defense attorney James Brown told jurors the child's mother did not take proper care of her and refused to fill her prescriptions. The day the girl stopped breathing, his client had taken the toddler home, bathed and dressed her and then noticed her gasping for air and wheezing, Brown said. He said Mickey called the child's mother to ask where to find her daughter's inhaler -- which she had for a pre-existing condition -- and she hung up on him, so he called 911. Outside court, defense co-counsel Mark Simowitz said he could not understand the jury's thinking on the verdicts. Acquitting his client of murder but convicting him on the child abuse causing death charge was an "inconsistent verdict,'' Simowitz said. "I don't know how that's much different,'' he said. "I don't know why they didn't believe the theory of a pre-existing head injury.''

Divided jury resumes deliberations on fate of Murrieta man accused in beating death of 16-month-old MURRIETA - A divided jury resumed deliberations today on the fate of a Murrieta man accused of fatally beating his girlfriend\\\'s 16-month-old daughter. Ryan Christopher Mickey, 30, is charged with first-degree murder and assault on a child with injury or death. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 25 years to life in prison. On Thursday, the jury indicated it had reached a verdict on the first-degree murder charge but was at an impasse on the child abuse charge and also lesser charges, such as manslaughter. A defense motion to declare a mistrial on the lesser charge and the abuse charge was denied. Following a conference in chambers with the attorneys, the judge ordered the jury back to court today to resume deliberations. Today marks the eighth day of deliberations for the jury, which last week asked for readback of doctors\' testimony and clarification on what constitutes provocation in second-degree murder. A second-degree murder conviction would bring less prison time than a first-degree conviction and manslaughter would result in even less. Kerianne Bradley died on Feb. 5, 2006, at Rady Children\'s Hospital-San Diego, a day after paramedics were summoned to the home that her mother shared with Mickey on Broken Arrow Way. The San Diego County deputy medical examiner who performed the autopsy testified the child suffered head and abdominal injuries consistent with a beating. Prosecutor Jess Walsh told the jury in his closing argument that Mickey was angered to learn his girlfriend intended to bring her husband back into her life when he got out of prison and, after drinking a beer, pummeled her child. Walsh rejected a defense argument that the toddler had been injured earlier in the week or had a pre-existing condition that led to cardiac arrest. Defense attorney James Brown said the baby stopped breathing because of some other injury or illness, and that Mickey inflicted other injuries while trying to resuscitate her. Brown told jurors the child\'s own mother did not take proper care of her and refused to fill her prescriptions. The day the girl stopped breathing, his client had taken the toddler home, bathed and dressed her and then noticed her gasping for air and wheezing, Brown said. He said Mickey called the child\'s mother to ask where to find her daughter\'s inhaler -- which she had for a pre-existing condition -- and she hung up on him, so he called 911.
No verdict yet for alleged murder of 16-month-old girl MURRIETA - Jurors went home for the weekend today without deciding the fate of a Murrieta man accused of fatally beating his girlfriend\'s 16-month-old daughter. Jurors today had various doctors\' testimony read back to them, according to prosecutor Jess Walsh. He told the panel in his closing argument that Mickey was angered to learn his girlfriend intended to bring her husband back into her life when he got out of prison and, after drinking a beer, pummeled her child. Walsh rejected a defense argument that the toddler had been injured earlier in the week or had a pre-existing condition that led to cardiac arrest. \"If she was hurt like this before, somebody would have noticed,\" he said, telling jurors not to be distracted by \"red herrings.\" Defense attorney James Brown argued the baby stopped breathing because of illness, and that Mickey inflicted the injuries while trying to resuscitate her. \"Ryan Mickey did not kill, nor did he intentionally harm this child,\" Brown said. The defense attorney told jurors the child\'s own mother did not take proper care of her and refused to fill her prescriptions. Closing arguments set today in trial of fatal beating of toddler
MURRIETA - Closing arguments are set to get under way today in the case of a man accused of fatally beating his girlfriend\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s 16-month-old daughter at their Murrieta home. Ryan Christopher Mickey is charged with murder and assault on a child causing injury or death. The 30-year-old defendant, who is being held in lieu of $2.04 million bail, faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of killing 16-month-old Kerianne Bradley. The toddler died Feb. 5, 2006, at Rady Children\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Hospital-San Diego, where she was airlifted from another medical center a day after paramedics were summoned to the home her mother shared with the defendant on Broken Arrow Way. A San Diego County deputy medical examiner who performed the autopsy said the youngster suffered severe head and abdominal injuries consistent with a beating. The defense has attempted to show that the baby stopped breathing because of illness, and that Mickey inflicted injuries while trying to resuscitate her. Dr. Kenneth Carr, who practices at Tri-City Hospital and Rady Children\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Hospital in San Diego County, testified that tests indicated that the infant suffered from internal bleeding and was dehydrated -- most likely from being sick for days. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"She was just not resuscitated vigorously enough,\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" said Carr, who said doctors should also have administered medication to promote clotting. The baby had a \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"depletion of the building products of blood clotting,\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" he said. The doctor said the toddler also developed \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"a very severe pneumonia at Children\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Hospital.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Under direct examination by defense attorney James Brown, the cardiologist said bruises which appeared on the child\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s face could have gotten worse because of her internal bleeding. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"The bruises got deeper as time went on,\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Carr said. Before the trial began, the judge granted a defense motion to exclude evidence of an elbow fracture suffered by the child prior to her death.

Someone who is capable of this kind of brutality on a child is not fit for society. 7:33 pm Tue, Jan 26th, 2010 3. luvtink says :25 yrs to life isn't enough. A innocent child was taken, I bet his lawyers are going to try and get him off with using "reasonable doubt" claus. Hope the jury see's through this and finds him guilty. I read another article where he recently threaten the guard at the jail house. 4:24 am Wed, Jan 27th, 2010 4. Matt R says :You know before you start making Ignorant judgments, and automatically blame Ryan for this you should ask yourself where was the mother of this child at?? Thats a good question because she wasn't home with her baby where she should have been. Ryan is the one who cared and loved that baby.. So another question to ask yourself is if the mother was never around and didn't care about her own baby, then could she have set up Ryan, so she could have a fresh start and not have to deal with being a mother, so she could go get High and slut around whenever she wanted? 10:01 am Wed, Jan 27th, 2010 5. Teresa says :Hey Matt R., you want to say people are making ignorant judgements when you don't even know what the heck you are saying either. She was at work and appearantly you know Ryan and if you think that it is okay what he did then you are sick yourself. How can you justify a grown man over 6 feet tall hurting a 16 month old baby and try to say that he was giving her cpr. You don't do that kind of damage giving cpr....a childs life was lost in his care, he did it, you know he did it, and like I said if you think that sticking up for him is the right thing to do then you are just as bad as him....you all are sick!!!!!!!! 1:27 pm Wed, Jan 27th, 2010 6. TheKingsKid says :If the child was dehydrated from an illness Matt how well was Ryan caring for that child? 2:09 pm Thu, Jan 28th, 2010 7. concerned says :Some people just have no morals! Anyone who would ask why the mother wasnt home when she was at WORK is an idiot! It wasnt like she was out "getting high or slutting around". She was at work. Not all moms are able to stay home with their kids!! By the way, Ryan was the one that admitted that he smoked pot that very same day!!!! He did it, no question about it!! 3:28 pm Thu, Jan 28th, 2010 8. oodle says :that dude is guilty your going to jail dude p.o.s 6:52 pm Fri, Jan 29th, 2010 9. Justice 4 Kerianne says :Baby killers are the lowest scum on this planet. There are 3 very simple facts here that can not be ingnored 1. at 12:30pm Mickey's mother saw Kerianne and testified that there were no marks on her(later she changed her story to help her son and said maybe there was a pink mark). 2. From 12:30pm-1:45pm, Mickey was the only person who had Kerianne. 3. During that time period, Kerianne was beaten to death. The coroner's testimony stated she suffered 6-10 blows and she was the victim of homicide. The child had knuckle marks on her back(the approximate size of an adult male fist). These injuries were not caused by CPR or Asthma(was that the defense's idea of a joke?) What's even worse is if you look at Mickey's prior behavior. Mickey has had prior violence with ex-girlfriends, including restraining orders by several of his ex-girlfriends and even Mickey's own family. The most disgusting thing about this is Kerianne suffered a broken arm 2 months before she was killed. Mickey had Kerianne during the time she broke her arm and claimed she fell. CPS declined to investigate even though several family members requested such, and the mother in her ignorance, did not believe Mickey could commit such an act and believed his story. Hindsight is 20/20, but this is something neither Mickey nor his family want to talk about. His attorney's fought vigoriously to have this supressed in court and scored a victory on that, and Mickey refused to take the stand so he could not be questioned on this and his other past crimes and violence. Mickey, you are a coward and a monster. You took a beautiful miracle from this world. She deserved to live her life. . .you do not! Rosan Mickey - I know you are trying to help your son, but in my book, you are just as bad as him. Denying Kerianne justice for your selfishness is wrong. Your motherly love would not protect his next victim should he be freed. I hope you are judged when you meet your maker for your actions. ![]() 9:04 pm Fri, Jan 29th, 2010 10. Matt R. U SUX says :the mother doesn't smoke pot and she doesn't even drink thats why the murderer was lying to her and the cops about drinking cause ms bradley would of broken up w/him if she knew he was drinking ...blood test were taken at the police office ms Bradley had no drugs in system..and i believe the only time the defendant watched her daughter was only when she worked she didn't go out she worked a lot so matt r you obviously were not present during the trial weirdo guilty guilty guilty across the board hope he only last a min in prison once the other convicts asks for his paperwork they dont like baby killers 9:05 pm Fri, Jan 29th, 2010 11. luvtink says :I became interested in this case and did some reading up on this guy, Ryan. His own dad had a restraining order on him and some girlfriends did to. I also read that some evidence was not allowed in the court room so the jury was not going to hear about all of it AND I also read he threaten the guard and needs to attend a hearing on that. I have attended some of the hearings and I also attended on Monday "closing remarks" and to me, Ryan is completely guilty. Yeah, the mom made some wrong choices and she is probably self centered and wasn't ready, and that was all said by the lawyers, but she did not make the fatal blows that cause Keriann's death. I liked that Mr. Walsh called her by her name, not like Mr. Brown calling her "it". I truly hope the jury finds him guilty, Ryan is guilty. 1:42 pm Tue, Feb 9th, 2010 12. concerned says :YAY!!!! Good luck tying your shoes and remember...one leg at a time when putting your pants on. 9:06 am Wed, Feb 10th, 2010 15. yay! says :Really Simowitz???? Why did they not believe your pre-existing head injury theory???? Uh...because it didn't make any sense! How could she have MULTIPLE bruises and subdural hemotomas and nobody saw them???? Even Mickey's own mother said the baby was fine when she saw her that morning. Pre-existing head injuries would have been noticed and would not have just sprung up when Mickey was ALONE with the baby! The brain damage she had was very extensive and the Doctors said she would have only survived minutes without life suport. She was basically already dead with no chance of living by the time the medics arrived. There is NO DEFENSE for what he did. 3:05 pm Thu, Feb 11th, 2010 16.
