TEMECULA - Investigators are trying to get the name of a young woman bicyclist who lies in a hospital today, badly hurt in a Friday traffic crash in Temecula.

Deputies said today they can only guess that the stricken bicyclist is about 18-20 years old.

The woman was crossing Redhawk Parkway at Overland Trail at about 12:25 p.m. Friday when a black tour van slammed into her, knocking her off the bike, said sheriff's Sgt. John Mangan.

some witnesses' reports," Mangan said. "The light turned green for Redhawk traffic, and they made contact."

Rescue personnel took her to a hospital, where she was being treated for major injuries. The woman was not wearing a helmet and had no identification with her, the sergeant said.

The driver of the van, a 70-year-old resident of Temecula, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. He was not suspected of wrongdoing, Mangan said.

The road was closed about five hours for the investigation.

It would be easier if the investigators had provided a picture, like maybe it could be a clue.

From what I understand, regarding the nature of the injuries, a picture might not make it any easier to identify the victim. Facial swelling after massive head trauma could mask her identity from even friends and family.

It is likely that with "badly hurt" that a picture would not help.
