TEMECULA - USMC Master Sergeant John Oberhuber surprised his son, Shayne, at a freshman football game at Temecula Valley High School last Thursday. MSgt Oberhuber had just returned from a deployment in Afghanistan at 10 am that morning.

Shayne Oberhuber, a quarterback and captain on the freshman football team walked out with his fellow captains for the pre-game meeting at the center of the field. Unbeknownst to him, his father -- dressed as a referee -- was walking out to the middle of the field right behind him. The opposing captains shook hands. MSgt Oberhuber then stepped out to do the coin toss – and surprised his son!

MSgt Oberhuber has had five combat deployments: four in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He was home for only fifteen days and was able to see his son’s first freshman football game. He returns to complete his one-year tour.

The boys had a great game, even though they lost, but the highlight of the game was this special surprise moment between father and son.

I was so happy to read about my son, MSgt John Oberhuber being able to surprise my grandson, Shayne at his first freshmen football game. Even better to be able to see a picture of the father & son hugging! Being on the east coast, I was not able to be there in person to see it live. Just knowing that John is in the states, even for a short time, will be enjoying spending some time with his family. Thank you for publishing this human interest story....I enjoyed reading it.
