It would be fair to say that Ava Sarnowski is one of many people around the world with a little more time to be creative.

“COVID-19 has given me the time to focus on myself and my career and my love for jazz,” she said in a phone interview. “So … yeah. On a more hopeful side to this though, I’ve been given much time to develop my identity as an independent singer.”

Sarnowski has made good use of her time, releasing her first single, “Where This Falling In Love Goes” on all streaming platforms in September and is readying to release another one soon. The jazz tune is a cover and available for purchase.

“I’ve always loved jazz and the genre has always held a very special place in my heart,” she said.

Sarnowski, 19, has been a mainstay in the Temecula Valley musical theater scene and began her training in classical music at an early age. That training seems to have paid off as she was awarded the senior award in the Certificate of Merit program for California.

“I’ve been singing for essentially my entire life,” she said. “Should you ask me to recall the exact year, I wouldn’t be able to. I was that young when I started.

“It was important to grow accustomed to musical theory at an early age,” Sarnowski said.

She said COVID-19 has gotten in the way of her love of being onstage.

“As for musical theater, I’ve been partaking in shows for years now,” Sarnowski said. “But after performing in over 50 of them locally and in regional theater, COVID-19 put a halt on everything.

“But I still have my heart set on eventually reaching Broadway,” she said.

While her first and second releases are covers, she said she wants to write songs as well.

“Someday I would like to write my own music though, as I find the process of writing lyrics extremely fascinating and fun,” Sarnowski said.

She said her second song, a similarly structured jazz piece named “NY Lonely,” will be out soon, and it is part of a larger puzzle.

“As of right now, I’m working on more music that’s being planned for release by the end of the year,” Sarnowski said. “Most of which are collaborations, as I have a few songs that were written specifically for me, and I absolutely cannot wait for people to hear them.”
