Because the nation is a republic – not a democracy. The latter supports tyranny by the majority, the former does not. Explaining it may require another column, however.The election of the president was entirely left to the state legislatures, not the masses. According to Article II, Sec. 2 of the Constitution, “Each state shall appoint, in such manner as the legislature thereof may direct, a number of electors, equal to the whole number of Senators and Representatives to which the state may be entitled in the Congress.”But none could be government officials.No political
