Updated youth sports guidance has been postponed until further notice

LOS ALAMITOS – The CIF Southern Section closed their office effective Tuesday, Nov. 17, until further notice, due to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s announcement Monday, Nov. 16, related to the increase in COVID-19 cases.

“We will reevaluate our office service based on the recommendations and guidance of local, state and federal health organizations as they evolve,” Rob Wigod, CIF-SS commissioner, said. “During this time, all employees will once again work remotely and will continue to be reachable via their individual email accounts and our main switchboard.”

During Monday’s COVID-19 news briefing, the governor and Dr. Mark Ghaly from the California Department of Public Health said that the release of updated youth sports guidance has been postponed. As such, the current guidance remains in effect, and CIF competitions are not allowed until new guidance is provided.

“It is an unfortunate setback on what we all have been striving for,” says Murrieta Mesa Athletic Director, John Broussard. “We all have to stay optimistic and do our best to stay positive until we get news on what will happen next. I will feel terrible for our Fall sports athletes if they can’t play. They got their season in last year, and Spring sports athletes did not, so if anything, and Fall doesn’t happen, hopefully our Spring sports programs will get their shot.”

The CIF Southern Section offices closed their doors and went remote in March of 2020 due to the pandemic, and remained close until the first week of July.

“It is unprecedented what today’s student athletes are going through,” Kevin Duenas, co-owner of Dynamic Fitness HPK in Temecula, said. “It will be tough on them from an emotional and motivational standpoint. For those wanting to improve during the pandemic, opportunities are still there. This forced break is a great time to learn about mobility and flexibility, prehab work, body recovery and mindset. You don’t need a team practice to work on individual improvement.”
