The CIF Southern Section offices released their latest updates regarding high school sports recently and announced their 2020-2021 goals. The CIF Southern Section executive committee, under the leadership of President Mike West, held their first meeting of the 2020-2021 school year virtually Thursday, Aug. 13. At that meeting, the executive committee accepted the 2020-2021 CIF Southern Section goals in this update.

“We are ready to go in the effort to achieve all of our goals and look forward to reporting on our progress in the time ahead,” West said.

The new principal/athletic director workshops will be coming soon. There are two specific workshops designed for new principals and athletic directors scheduled Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon and Thursday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. These workshops will help athletic administrators prepare for the 2020-2021 school year. Guidelines for communication, new rules, review of eligibility, suggestions and best practices for athletic programs are just a few of the topics that will be covered. To register for one of these workshops, email Susan Miller at susanm@cifss.org. A specific invitation will be emailed to school administrators before the workshops.

Since the announcement of the 2020-2021 sports calendars, the CIF offices said the reaction has been positive.

“I have heard from countless principals, athletic directors and coaches, as well as read many news articles, in which those who were quoted spoke with purpose and conviction in doing all they can to develop workable schedules that our student athletes and all our stakeholders are depending on,” Rob Wigod, commissioner of CIF Southern Section, said. “I am grateful to everyone who is continuing to work so diligently on accomplishing this task and am appreciative of the uplifting spirit which they are exhibiting throughout this process.”

As the school year begins and moves forward, CIF administrators said they want to be sure and let Athletic Directors know to invite them to any meetings as they are more than happy to join.

“We were able to attend many league meetings last spring and are prepared to do so again,” Wigod aid. “To get one of us on your league meeting schedule, please email me robw@cifss.org and we will make it happen.”

One of the latest updates also involves CIF Bylaw 503.G – Pre-Participation Physical Examination – the 30-day waiver for the pre-participation physical examination that was announced in June is no longer applicable given the delay of the fall season of sport to December. At this time, all students are expected to have a completed pre-participation examination on file with their school before participating in their next season of sport. The waiver forms have been removed from the CIF State website and a statement regarding this situation has been inserted in their place.

“I hope this information is useful to you moving forward and if you have any questions, or I can help you in any way at all, do not hesitate to contact me,” Wigod said. “My staff and I are ready, willing and able to assist you in any way we possibly can. Thank you very much for your help and support, it is truly appreciated. Be well, stay safe, take care and all the best to you and your families.”
