MENIFEE (CNS) – A freeway overpass in Menifee is scheduled to be demolished this weekend, requiring a full closure of Interstate 215 for two nights, during which motorists will be detoured around the project site.

According to the Menifee Department of Public Works, the original two-lane Scott Road bridge is scheduled to be taken down in segments on Friday and Saturday nights. The demolition work had been set for this past weekend, but planning issues delayed it for a week.

The old overcrossing was replaced earlier this year with a six-lane span, serving as the new Scott Road/I-215 Interchange.

The first freeway shutdown is slated to get underway at 8 p.m. Friday and end about 8 a.m. Saturday, and for the duration, both north- and southbound traffic will be diverted off of I-215 via newly expanded exit and entrance ramps at Scott. Motorists will be able to rejoin the freeway at the same location, safely bypassing the construction activity.

The second closure is expected to start at 10 p.m. Saturday and end about 9 a.m. Sunday, according to officials.

Local traffic within the city will be detoured away from the overpass and onto Newport Road.

The $58 million interchange replacement project got underway in the summer of 2018 and is a joint venture of the city, Riverside County Department of Transportation and Caltrans.

The county has managed the project from the beginning, conducting environmental and engineering studies going back to 2005, as well as securing contractors.

Improvements have involved constructing the new six-lane overpass immediately adjacent to the old one, replacing the standard freeway exit and entrance ramps with loop ramps that can accommodate more vehicles, and adding new turn lanes for both northbound and southbound traffic.

Construction is expected to wrap up in the next few months.
