MORENO VALLEY – Elsinore High School came out on top among 17 teams from 16 local high school teams to claim their fourth consecutive championship at the 37th Riverside County Academic Decathlon sponsored by the Riverside County Office of Education Saturday, Jan. 25, and Saturday, Feb. 1, at Vista del Lago High School in Moreno Valley.

Hemet High School finished second and West Valley High School was third. Western Center Academy finished fourth and Great Oak High School was fifth overall. Hemet High School was the winner of the popular Super Quiz held earlier in the day.

The theme for 2020 was “In Sickness and in Health: An Exploration of Illness and Wellness.” The first day of this year’s competition was Saturday, Jan. 25, and featured essay writing, speeches and interviews. Teams competed Saturday, Feb. 1, via written tests in the morning followed by the popular Super Quiz.

The California Academic Decathlon will be held March 26-29, in Sacramento. The California state champion advances to the United States Academic Decathlon from April 30 to May 2, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Each team is composed of nine students, three from each grade point category, and includes three Honor (GPA 3.75-4.00), three Scholastic (GPA 3.00-3.74) and three Varsity (GPA 0.00-2.99) students. Students accumulate individual and team points in written events in mathematics, economics, art, music, literature, science, social science and Super Quiz.

For 2020, the 17 teams competing from 16 Riverside County high schools included Beaumont, Canyon Springs, Corona, Elsinore, Great Oak, Hemet, John F. Kennedy Middle College, John W. North, Palm Desert, San Jacinto, Shadow Hills, Temecula Preparatory, Valley View (2 teams), Vista del Lago, West Valley and Western Center Academy high schools.

Elsinore won the Riverside County Academic Decathlon from 2017 through 2020. West Valley High School won in 2009-2013, 2015 and 2016. Hemet won 2006-2008 and 2014.
