Expanded closure of 91 Freeway planned Monday night in Corona

CORONA (CNS) – The westbound Riverside (91) Freeway will be completely shut down in Corona tonight for emergency repairs, near where a closure was already planned for work on the 91/Interstate 15 interchange, according to Caltrans.
“Crews have to fix some pavement that has been deteriorating,” agency spokeswoman Terri Kasinga told City News Service.
The westbound 91 will be closed from Main Street to Lincoln Avenue beginning at 11:30 p.m., and all five lanes will remain out of service until 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Kasinga.
The closure ties into a shutdown that was already scheduled as part of the I-15 Express Lanes Project.
Both the east- and westbound sides of the 91 will be closed Monday and for the two next two nights where the freeway intersects I-15 to give crews an opportunity to remove temporary support structures beneath the interchange.
The I-15 Express Lanes Project is managed by the Riverside County Transportation Commission. The emergency pavement repairs are being handled by Caltrans contractors.
Kasinga said the repairs will interrupt the detour of westbound motorists, who will not be able to re-enter the westbound side of the freeway from I-15 until 1:30 a.m. They will instead be routed through Corona via city streets.
The I-15 Express Lanes work will conclude about 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Eastbound motorists will be directed north on I-15, then turned around at Hidden Valley Parkway to re-enter the 91 during the work.
The $472 million project has entailed expanding I-15 between the Pomona (60) Freeway in Eastvale and Cajalco Road on the south edge of Corona.
According to RCTC, closures on the 91 will be required again between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday, and from 11 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday.
