The 2020 CIF Scholar-Athletes of the Year were announced recently, and Great Oak High School senior Cole Sawires-Yager was awarded a $1,000 scholarship as a representative of the Southern Section. Sawires-Yager was a dominate fixture in both the cross-country and track and field programs over the last four years at Great Oak and will be taking his talent to the University of California Berkley this fall.
Since 1982, the scholarship award identifies student-athletes who excel in the classroom, athletics and are strong contributors to their schools and communities. Sawires-Yager, along with 20 other CIF Section winners, was selected from a pool of 374 candidates representing 1,606 CIF member schools and more than 830,000 student-athletes statewide.
“Our CIF scholar-athletes embody the principles of education-based athletics,” Ron Nocetti, executive director of CIF, said. “On behalf of the entire CIF family, I congratulate all of our scholar-athletes. They are certainly examples of all that is positive during these challenging times.”
