Highway 60 ‘Swarm’ bridge repairs and truck lane widening projects continue

Gilman Springs Road traffic from Hemet San Jacinto Valley residents traveling to Moreno Valley and the beach cities this past holiday weekend continued to climb with lane closures continuing on state Route 60 from Interstate 15 to state Route 91.

The California Department of Transportation updated what they call the “60 Swarm” projects, which are continuing on Route 60 to repair deteriorated pavement slabs and replace the Pipeline, Monte Vista and Benson Avenue bridges in the Moreno and Riverside area. The bridge repairs are in conjunction with the planned widening of Highway 60 from Beaumont to Moreno Valley for additional truck lanes by the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

The truck lane widening runs through the Riverside County “Badlands” area. The Commission is the lead agency for the project, which includes widening a 4.5-mile section of Route 60 between Gilman Springs Road and 1.4 miles west of Jack Rabbit Trail through unincorporated Riverside County between Moreno Valley and Beaumont.

There will be a full closure westbound and a single lane closure eastbound Saturday, Sept. 14, from 4 a.m. to Sunday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. The closure will allow crews to safely remove large rocks from the hillside without danger to passing motorists. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during this closure.

The project segment lies within mountainous terrain with a curving alignment and steep grades. The project is designed to improve safety and efficiency and reduce traffic congestion for commuters, goods movement and travelers to desert resorts.

The Caltrans SR-60 Pavement Rehabilitation Project in week seven, of 15 weekends, of full directional closures of eastbound SR-60 between I-15 and Routes 60/91/215 Junction in Riverside from Friday, Sept. 13, at 10 p.m. through Monday, Sept. 16, at 5 a.m. There are two remaining weekend closures of the eastbound SR-60 followed by six weekend closures of westbound SR-60.

All lanes and ramps are closed during the directional closures. There will be no closures on the Veteran’s Day holiday weekend. Motorists who are just passing through are advised to use state Route 91 and Interstate 10 around the 60 Swarm as alternate routes to avoid delays. Local businesses are open during the project. For the repaving project, eastbound SR-60 nighttime lane and ramp closures will take place from Valley Way to the Routes 60/91/215 Junction in Riverside.

The speed limit will be lowered to 55 miles per hour within the project limits. For up-to-date information on the 60 Swarm, call the hotline at (833) 607-9276.
