The Chaparral Pumas baseball team handed the Norco Cougars their first loss of the season Monday, Feb. 24, in the Chino Tournament. In what was a pitcher’s duel through the first 4 innings, Chaparral (3-2) got the lead and held on late in the game. Sophomore Chris Lopez picked up the win in relief for Chaparral. Lopez came in after junior Zack Ernisse kept the Cougars at bay during his time on the bump.
Norco (4-1), who swept Great Oak in a double header to start the season, hit the ball well with three players having multiple hit games (O’Donnell, Conniff, Cermeneilli). Despite the hard hitting action from the Cougars, four Puma pitchers teamed up to hold Norco to just 1 run. Senior Hunter Messere and junior Rheego McIntosh also helped in relief, throwing 1 inning each. Ernisse led the Pumas at the plate as well, picking up 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. McIntosh added the other RBI, going 1 for 4 in the game.
