As a means to get ready for the tough season ahead, the Lady Pumas of Chaparral High School took to the courts at Citrus Valley High School this past weekend. It didn’t take long for Chaparral to show dominance as they took out Saugus High School (25-15, 25-16) to begin the tournament. Next up they defeated Oak Hills High School 25-17 and 27-25 in a tighter match, but now the cylinders were firing in all directions as they went on to take out Granite Hills High School, who didn’t put up much of a fight, as the Lady Pumas prevailed 25-6 and 25-12. Bonita High School would be their next victim as they fell 25-13 and 25-15, which sent Chaparral into the championship game against Hemet High School.
“Our staff is teaching the girls to understand the game at a higher level. We’re all pushing ourselves to become the best we can be while trying to enjoy the process,” Chaparral Head Coach Gail Johnson said.
In the final match of the tournament, Chaparral never backed down to the Lady Bulldogs, claiming the title of tournament champs with a 25-15 and 25-16 win. Freshman Bella Rittenberg was named the MVP of the tournament, and sophomore Saige Rivera was chosen for the All-Tournament team.
“We weren’t sure what to expect as many of the teams in this tournament had 20 plus wins last season,” Johnson said. “After winning back to back tournaments our focus is to keep working hard, especially now that the regular season is upon us.”
