The high school winter sports season is one of the shorter seasons, for the most part, due to the holiday break, but the overall goal is still the same when it comes to winning. With the end of the regular season in the rearview mirror, this week mark’s the start of the post season for boys’ and girls’ basketball and soccer, as well as girl’s water polo and wrestling.

On the basketball courts there seemed to be a changing of the guard within some of the local leagues, especially the Southwestern League. The Great Oak High School boys took the title this year with an undefeated run in league, sporting an overall 23-4 record. Murrieta Mesa High School found themselves at the top of the standings as well, coming right behind the Wolfpack at 7-3 (18-7 overall). For the girls, it was also Murrieta Mesa who found themselves on top, winning their first ever league title. In fact, the entire program went undefeated in league, a feat that is absolutely worth mentioning. Other top boys’ teams from around the valley included Perris High School (12-0, 22-6; Sunbelt League), Rancho Christian High School (21-5, Southeastern League) and Citrus Hill High School (9-1, 19-7; Mountain Pass League). Top girls’ teams included Paloma Valley High School (13-1, 25-3; Sunbelt League), Hemet High School (19-8, 9-1; Mountain Pass League) and San Jacinto Valley Academy (10-0, 14-1; South Valley League).

On the soccer fields the Chaparral High School Pumas made quite a statement this season going undefeated in the Southwestern League, garnishing an 8-0-2 record and 13-3-5 overall for the boys’ team, and for the girls it was Temecula Valley High School on top for the third straight year with their 8-1-1 record (17-2-5 overall). Other top teams from around the area included Heritage High School (3-0-6) of the Sunbelt League and Hemet (9-0-1, 18-3-2) of the Mountain Pass League.

In the water for those ladies that love to throw the ball around, Murrieta Valley, Tahquitz, Murrieta Mesa, Temecula Valley, Temescal Canyon, Vista Murrieta, Lakeside, Hemet and Heritage high schools will all look to keep their heads above water in their perspective water polo playoff divisions. The post season brackets for the winter sports teams that will be looking to be the last one standing, victoriously, are as follows:
