Critical race theory recognizes that racism is engrained in the fabric of American society, and that existing power structures are built on White supremacy. This country was physically and metaphorically built on slavery, and there are clear remnants of that system today, including the criminal justice system.
The article said that “it was unconscionable for slavery to continue” after the Revolutionary War. Our country was not fully built in 1776, and the same people who fought for freedom in the revolution wrote that slavery should be legal in 1789, when the Constitution was accepted as the law of the land. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, who held the “Judeo-Christian values” mentioned, owned thousands of slaves combined. We should not be relying on their beliefs over 200 years later; instead, we should examine the past critically and understand their wrongdoings, which critical race theory seeks to do.
