NUEVO (CNS) – A man was killed and two other people were injured today in a crash just east of Nuevo that caused the vehicle to split into two pieces.
The wreck happened about 1:30 p.m. on the Ramona Expressway, less than a half-mile east of Hansen Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The agency said there were initial reports that the occupants of the Ford sedan may have committed a robbery in San Jacinto and were fleeing westbound when the crash occurred, but that account was unconfirmed.
According to the CHP, the vehicle went out of control at high speed and slammed into a pole or other roadside object, causing the car to break apart.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced one occupant dead at the scene, while the other two were taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment of moderate injuries, officials said.
None of the parties were identified.
CHP officers shut down both east- and westbound lanes on the Ramona Expressway at the site of the crash, diverting traffic onto side streets to get around the closure, which was expected to last until at least 4 p.m.
