RIVERSIDE (CNS) – A Riverside man suspected of fatally shooting a 16-year-old boy and wounding his friend during an attack outside a Highgrove strip mall two months ago was being held Tuesday in lieu of $1 million bail.
Adrian Anthony Barroso, 19, was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside Monday on suspicion of murder.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, detectives located Barroso close to the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the Mexican border, where he was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect allegedly gunned down Chris Veloz of San Bernardino on the evening of Oct. 3.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Espinoza said that shortly after 6 p.m., Veloz and another male teen, whose identity was not disclosed, were in the 1300 block of Center Street, near Iowa Avenue, when they were shot.
Veloz perished at the scene. His friend was taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment and has since recovered from his wounds.
Deputies were unable to locate the gunman that night. However, detectives spent the ensuing two months developing leads and ultimately identified Barroso as the alleged perpetrator, according to Espinoza.
A possible motive for the attack has not been disclosed.
Charges in the case could be filed as early as Wednesday, following a review of the sheriff’s investigation by prosecutors.
