Motorcyclist killed in head-on collision on Ortega Highway


LAKE ELSINORE — A fatal accident between a motorcyclist and a vehicle at 12:50 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30 on State Route 74, also known as the Ortega Highway, occurred near 2 miles west of Grand Avenue in Lake Elsinore.

According to California Highway Patrol Temecula Area officer Mike Lassig, a 66-year-old Lake Elsinore man was making a left turn into the driveway of his residence headed westbound on Route 74 when the collision occurred.

Lassig said a 37-year-old man from Lake Elsinore was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed on a sport motorcycle and coming out of a sharp corner when he collided head-on with the vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

As of 2:45 p.m., one lane remains blocked as the CHP continues its investigation and they ask that motorists use alternate routes if possible.
