Motorcyclist struck, killed by vehicle in Lake Elsinore

LAKE ELSINORE (CNS) – A motorist driving across a Lake Elsinore street to reach his home after leaving a strip mall ran into and killed a 52-year-old motorcyclist, authorities said today.

Timothy Collins of Lakeland Village was fatally injured about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday on Grand Avenue, just north of Sangston Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer William Strom said Collins was riding his Suzuki motorcycle north on Grand at about 45 mph and was approaching the Lake Country Plaza just as 67-year-old Ralph Taylor was preparing to pull out of the mall parking lot in his Toyota Camry.

According to Strom, Taylor was attempting to drive across Grand to return to his residence, which was on the opposite side of the street, in the Weekend Paradise RV Park.

“Taylor failed to yield the right-of-way and drove his vehicle directly into the path of Mr. Collins,” the officer said. “Mr. Collins was unable to stop, and the front of his motorcycle collided with the right front of the Toyota. He was ejected from his motorcycle, sustained major injuries and expired at the scene.”

Taylor was not hurt.

He was questioned by officers but not arrested. However, Strom said the investigation is ongoing, and charges could be sought when it is completed.
