Murrieta Mesa swim team makes a splash in first meet of the season

The Murrieta Mesa High School boys’ and girls’ swim team attended their first meet of the season Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Riverside Poly High School Pentathlon. Swimmers at this meet either competed in five freestyle events or five medley events.

In the girls’ division, Murrieta Mesa won by 121 points, and in the boys’ division, they also won with 121 points with a combined win overall with 242.

“It was a great team effort and overall Mesa swimmers took first place in all divisions,” Coach Jenn Beech said.

In the freestyle division, the following swimmers were top 8 high point scorers overall: senior Liberty Gilbert (first), freshman Emilee Elizondo (third), junior Taylor Simon (fourth), sophomore Justin Schneider (first), senior Mitchell Johnson (fifth) and sophomore Eryk Elizondo (seventh). In the medley division the following swimmers were top 8 high point scorers overall: freshman Sonja Aarsvold (sixth), sophomore Maximus Dillon (first) and sophomore Alexander Yano (third).

Other individual highlights from the meet were Maximus Dillon, who broke the meet record in the 50-meter butterfly going 23.86 seconds and in the 50-meter backstroke with 24.50. Justin Schneider broke a meet record in the 25-meter freestyle with a 9.99.

“It was an overall a great start to the season for Mesa,” Beech said.
