The Anza Lions Club and Anza Chamber of Commerce are planning a new and different Anza Days parade Saturday, June 27, this year at the Anza Lions Club’s Minor Horse Arena and surrounding area, instead of Highway 371, according to the promoters.

Traditionally, the Anza Days Parade has been held on Highway 371 from Bahrman Road to Minor Park with vendors and awards presentations, but this year, the state has not granted the township permission to close down the state highway for the parade, Mimi “Michele” Brown, Anza Lions Club chairman and president, said.

“We can’t do it there now, so it will be here at the arena and the land around it,” Brown said.

The Lions’ horse arena, 35591 Kirby Road, hosts the area’s gymkhanas and other community events, including Pioneer Days, during the year, but until last week, it was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While final plans are still underway for the township’s signature Anza Days Parade and Carnival, which will feature the theme, “Myths, Legends and Fancy,” Brown said invitations are going out for vendors, entertainers and more for the carnival. Already arranged for the carnival is a flyover, miniature golf course, sumo wrestling matches, a 16-foot tall rock-climbing wall and a mechanical bull. Parade entrants will compete for best theme entries, and all entrants are encouraged to employ patriotic themes as well.

The parade’s grand marshal will be Thomas Firth. Kathy Blair will announce the opening ceremony with the singing the national anthem and the posting of the colors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1873. The chamber of commerce will provide entertainment including “The Rollies,” followed by “Moon Shot.”

Plans are underway for more events over the June 26-28 weekend, including the annual Friday night Thimble Club Pancake Breakfast and a dinner.

She said Anza Days “carnival” wristbands will be $25 with unlimited rides and other attractions.

Meanwhile, the Lions are seeking volunteers for setup and cleanup. Call Brown at 951-763-7075 for more information and to volunteer. Information on Anza Lions Club membership and event updates can be found at
