Under the leadership of adult advisers, the students who have been participating in Temecula Presents’ arts education internship since October are nearing the opening of the musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Revised).”
The student-led musical production, supported in part by the California Arts Council, features a cast of more than a dozen students under the direction of fellow students in production roles.
Gabriel Esqueda is the set designer, Leah Ballard is the assistant stage manager, Emily Schwank is the stage manager and Sean Barnett will serve as director for the production that will open Friday, Jan. 10, at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater.
Overseeing the three-month process is adult advisers Brittany Campbell as artistic director, Victoria Patton as musical director and photographer Shawna Sarnowski.
The cast consists of Kobey Lovell as Charlie Brown; Lauren Branin as Lucy Van Pelt; Joelle Davis as Sally Brown; Riley Lovell as Schroeder; Jack Schwank as Linus Van Pelt; Dustin Lystra as Snoopy; Paul Fernandez as Woodstock; Shelly Flores as Peppermint Patty; Willow Scharf as Marcie and Kaleb Rodriguez as Pigpen.
The production is presented through a special arrangement with TAMS-Witmark, with musical recording provided by The MT Pit, L.L.C., and is based on the comic strip, “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz. The book, music and lyrics are by Clark Gesner, the additional dialogue is by Michael Mayer and additional music and lyrics are by Andrew Lippa.
“‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Revised)’ is a fresh approach to the all-time 1967 classic, based on the beloved comic strip by Charles M. Schulz,” according to a press release from the city of Temecula. “Sally Brown joins Charlie Brown, Linus Van Pelt, Lucy Van Pelt, Schroeder and Snoopy in this charming revue of vignettes and songs. Two new songs – ‘Beethoven Day’ and ‘My New Philosophy’ – have been added to the 12 numbers from the original version, which include: ‘My Blanket and Me,’ ‘The Baseball Game,’ ‘Little Known Facts,’ ‘Suppertime’ and ‘Happiness.’”
The musical was the winner of two Tony Awards for featured actor and featured actress, plus three Drama Desk awards for revival, featured actor and featured actress.
The entire production and internship was presented free of charge for participants.
“The creative vision for Temecula Presents’ Arts Education Internship was to offer local teens the opportunity to create a show from top to bottom at no cost to the participating performers and crew,” according to the press release. “The experience these talented students are receiving is unique as they are directly involved in every aspect of producing and presenting the show.”
“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Revised)” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 and Sunday, Jan. 12 at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater, 42051 Main Street in Temecula.
