Some Target and Walmart locations in the Temecula Valley were closing early Sunday night, apparently in the face of protests that have erupted into riots and resulted in property damage and theft nationwide, although there have been no reports of rioting anywhere in Southwest Riverside County.

A worker who answered the phone at the Temecula Parkway Walmart confirmed to a Valley News reporter that the store had closed at 5 p.m., although the worker would not explain why.

The Target in Lake Elsinore was displaying a sign at its entrance Sunday afternoon that said the store had closed at 5 p.m., which it attributed only to “the circumstances around us.” The store will reopen at 8 a.m., according to the sign.

Other local stores, including the Walmart location in Murrieta and Target stores in Murrieta and Temecula, did not answer the phone Sunday evening.
