COACHELLA (CNS) – Video footage sent to a local television station appears to show a suspect on the ground in Coachella with several sheriff’s deputies punching and kneeing him after he allegedly resisted arrest.
According to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department statement, deputies responded to a disturbing the peace call at a business in the 51800 block of Cesar Chavez Street about 11 a.m. Monday and encountered a suspect who “immediately became confrontational with responding deputies and soon thereafter became combative.”
Garrett Torro, 35, of Banning was transported to a area hospital for treatment of what were described as minor injuries before being booked at the Indio jail on suspicion of misdemeanor resisting arrest and being released on $5,000 bail, the sheriff’s department reported.
The video footage obtained by KESQ shows at least three sheriff’s deputies punching and kneeing someone on the ground, although the validity of the video has not been verified by the sheriff’s department.
The sheriff’s department said Torro and multiple deputies suffered minor injuries.
According to KESQ, the anonymous viewer that sent the video to the station said he was concerned about how the arrest unfolded and how the deputies approached the scene, allegedly at high speed and running a red light — without lights or sirens.
