This is an ongoing early version story.

A driver was killed early Saturday morning when a gray Cadillac Escalade went off the roadway and became high-centered on a cliff along Sandia Creek Drive near De Luz Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Anthony Campbell of AC Investigations was advised by a source on scene that a possible homicide may have occurred. The information suggested that an individual could have been shot and a vehicle was subsequently burned in the car. The information is unconfirmed at this time.

The crash was reported at 5:36 a.m. about one mile north on De Luz Road of the DeLuz/Sandia Creek fork.  Emergency dispatchers noted it was a solo-vehicle collision. Responding units confirmed the incident was a fatality at 6:06 a.m. and requested Omega Mortuary to the scene.

Authorities closed De Luz Rd in both directions, issuing a SigAlert at 7:19 a.m. Both lanes are reported to be shut down for an extended period as investigators work the scene.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the road closure and investigation. Tow trucks were called to remove the SUV.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of family.
