A tire blowout triggered a two-vehicle collision on southbound Interstate 15 near Rancho California Road in Temecula early Friday morning, sending one vehicle rolling off the freeway and causing traffic disruptions during the morning commute, authorities said.
The crash was reported shortly after 8:15 a.m. Dec. 26, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP officers said a silver Honda Civic suffered a tire blowout, causing the driver to lose control, collide with a red Ford F-250 pickup truck.
The impact caused the Honda to flip over and travel over a fence, coming to rest off the freeway in the McDonald’s parking lot on Jefferson Ave. The Ford pickup also left the roadway and ended up partially in a ditch, CHP logs show. Both vehicles were reported on the right side of the freeway, with the truck described as high-centered on a fence.
The collision damaged approximately 50 feet of fencing, and both vehicles ultimately came to rest in the McDonald’s parking lot at 28100 Jefferson Ave., after the truck was pulled into the parking lot.
CHP officers reported that injuries were involved, though the number of people injured and the severity of their injuries were not immediately available. Crews from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection were notified, and tow trucks were requested to recover the vehicles.
Traffic was affected in the area as emergency responders worked the scene. By about 8:45 a.m., CHP units had cleared the incident, though delays continued for motorists traveling through the area.
