HEMET, Calif. —
A bicyclist died Sunday evening after being struck by a delivery truck at a major intersection, according to the Hemet Police Department.
The collision occurred at approximately 6:49 p.m. at the intersection of Florida and Hamilton avenues. A Hemet Police officer on patrol witnessed the immediate aftermath of the crash and attempted life-saving measures on the bicyclist, who was found in the roadway with major injuries.
Despite the officer’s efforts and the arrival of medical personnel, the bicyclist succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary findings from the Hemet Police Department Traffic Bureau indicate the bicyclist was attempting to cross Florida Avenue when they rode directly into the path of a delivery truck traveling westbound.
The driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Police stated that impaired driving is not suspected to be a factor in the incident.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities closed Florida Avenue between Western Avenue and Elk Street for nearly five hours while investigators processed the scene. The roadway was reopened at approximately 11:30 p.m.
