HEMET — The Hemet Police Department is coordinating with the Hemet Unified School District regarding a potential student walkout scheduled for Friday, Feb. 6, while highlighting safe and lawful alternatives for student expression.
Authorities confirmed they are aware of flyers circulating on social media referencing a demonstration at area schools. While the flyers reference First Amendment–protected protest, police and school officials are emphasizing the distinction between lawful expression and actions that violate state attendance laws.
“The Hemet Police Department respects the constitutional rights of individuals to engage in lawful expression, while recognizing California truancy policies, as well as school district attendance and safety policies regarding campus operations,” the department said in a statement.
To ensure student safety and maintain orderly operations, officers will be in communication with school sites throughout the day and are prepared to assist with traffic flow and situational awareness if needed.
Ramifications and alternatives in response to the circulating flyers, officials and community leaders are urging students to consider the ramifications of leaving campus, which can include disciplinary consequences under truancy laws.
Instead of a walkout, students are encouraged to utilize alternative methods of protest that do not disrupt school operations or lead to consequences. Endorsed forms of expression include:
- Public Assembly: Assembling at public places and holding signs during non-school days or hours.
- Coordinated Attire: Wearing coordinated shirts—both at school and outside of school—that display language protected by freedom of speech.
- Civic Engagement: Writing letters to local, state, or federal government officials. Students are also encouraged to seek the help of parents, schools, and libraries to assist in getting their concerns heard. Writing letters to the editor to Valley News is an avenue of free speech as well (Valleyeditor@reedermedia.com)
Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss these expectations with their children. Questions regarding specific campus policies should be directed to school administrators.
