A 2-inch gas main leak that shut down a major thoroughfare and impacted a commercial building in La Quinta was mitigated late Friday morning. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters responded to the report of an outside gas leak at 7:42 a.m. in the 47000 block of Washington Street, just south of Avenue 47. The leak prompted authorities to shut down both lanes of Washington Street while crews worked to secure the area.
The Riverside County Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials team, along with crews from Southern California Gas Co. and the Department of Environmental Health, were called to the scene to assist with the response.
By 11:01 a.m., fire officials announced the gas leak had been successfully contained and mitigated. First responders remained on the scene for an additional 45 minutes to monitor the area, ensure public safety, and conclude emergency operations.
Authorities confirmed that no civilians or emergency personnel were injured during the incident. Traffic on Washington Street is expected to resume normal flow following the departure of the remaining emergency crews.
