Mercy Air landed on the southbound I-15 near Rainbow Valley Road, to transport a victim with life-threatening injuries from a rollover crash. Another victim with life-threatening injuries was taken by ground transport. The SigAlert remains in effect tonight, Saturday, August 1, after the rollover crash forced the closure of all southbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Rainbow Valley Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at 7:46 p.m. Witnesses told dispatchers a vehicle rolled over multiple times on the northbound side before crossing the center divider into the southbound lanes. One caller reported the vehicle was “still flipping” as it crossed the freeway.
Dispatch logs indicate the collision involved two vehicles, including a white Infiniti and a Nissan. A witness reported the Infiniti struck the center divider before crossing into opposing traffic.
CHP shut down all southbound lanes at approximately 8:01 p.m. as emergency crews responded. At 8:08 p.m., dispatchers confirmed a SigAlert had been issued and advised that a medical helicopter would be landing on the freeway while incident commanders coordinated the response.
By 8:28 p.m., dispatchers reported the helicopter had departed with a patient, but all southbound lanes remained closed. Officials also reported heavy traffic in the area and requested that electronic message signs be activated to warn approaching motorists.
Tow trucks were dispatched to the scene, and at 8:32 p.m. CHP requested a traffic break on the northbound side to allow crews to remove debris from the roadway.
The SigAlert remained in effect until late Saturday night, with reports confirming it was still active at 11:25 p.m. By early Sunday morning, all restrictions on southbound I-15 through Rainbow had been lifted, indicating the incident had been cleared overnight. While authorities did not publish an official cancellation time for the SigAlert, traffic appears to have returned to normal during the early morning hours Sunday.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Information on the patient’s condition and the duration of the SigAlert was not immediately available.
