Melendez takes lead in California’s 28th Senate District special election

Republican Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez has taken the lead in the race for California’s 28th Senate District Seat left vacant by former Sen. Jeff Stone, who accepted a national appointment from President Donald Trump in November of 2019. After taking the top two spots in California’s March primaries, Melendez is running against Democrat Elizabeth Romero for the seat in the special election called by Gov. Gavin Newsom Nov. 15, 2019. As of Tuesday, May 12, at 9 p.m., Melendez currently has secured 95,378 votes while Romero has 75,248 of the votes counted. Riverside County mailed 491,034 votes to registered voters for the by-mail election ordered by Newsom in March due to the threat of COVID-19.
