MEAD VALLEY (CNS) - A brush fire that broke out this afternoon in Mead Valley blackened roughly 225 acres before it was stopped. The non-injury blaze was reported about 1:30 p.m. in the area of Gavilan Road and Lake Mathews Drive, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. About 150 personnel were sent to the location and encountered flames burning west over barren hills. No homes or other structures were threatened. Three Cal Fire water-dropping helicopters and four air tankers were called in to make runs on the brusher, and the forward rate of spread was stopped by 4 p.m. By 5 p.m., the blaze was partially contained, with full containment expected after dark, according to reports from the scene. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
