Caltrans conducts rock removal near Pine Cove on Highway 243

Idyllwild, Pine Cove and mountain areas motorists were told Friday, Feb. 12, that Caltrans and specialized crews from Caltrans’ Keen Camp and GEOTECH would remove dangerous rock outcroppings on Route 243 Thursday, Feb. 18.Motorists in the area were warned to take other routes from postmile 6.5 near Pine Cove because crews would be removing the rock along the embankment of the highway. Work began at 8:30 a.m. and ended about 4 p.m., weather permitting. Traffic was held up to 30 minutes in each direction, Caltrans said.Caltrans, working with Riverside County Transportation Commission, also said closures were conducted previously on westbound lanes.
