Having been male all my life, it was hard for me to empathize with women when the word “he” was used in cases which could involve females. I didn't start using “he or she” until I typed papers in college for other students and had to fulfill the occasional request to stretch a paper to its minimum page length.Once I started getting paid by the word, I got into the habit of using the gender-neutral option “they.” Now that I’ve gotten used to the additional verbiage – this concept also allowed me to respect the replacement of “Black” with “African American,” there’s a move afoot to make God gender neutral, as in “God or Goddess.”This gender-neutral terminology is known as “inclusive language,” because it covers all sexes.
