Child struck, killed by motorist exiting his driveway

A child was struck and killed by a motorist pulling out of his driveway just south of Menifee, authorities said. The fatality happened about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10,  on Whembly Circle, just west of Cherry Hinton Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officer Mike Lassig said a 35-year-old man was exiting his driveway in his 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck, “slowly pulling forward,” when the 2-year-old girl walked directly in front of him. “The right front of the vehicle struck (her) within the northwesterly corner of the residential driveway,” Lassig said. He said the motorist immediately stopped and called 911. Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced the child dead at the scene.
