10 Digits will be required for calls to 951 area code Starting Oct. 24

RIVERSIDE COUNTY – Beginning Oct. 24, calls to the 951 area code will require dialing 1 plus the area code and phone number. The change to 10-digit dialing for local calls was ordered by the Federal Communications Commission as preparation for a move to designate 988 as the national three-digit suicide and mental health crisis hotline. The dialing shortcut takes effect nationwide July 16, 2022. Beginning Oct. 24 local calls dialed with only seven digits will reach a recording that the call cannot be completed as dialed. Callers must hang up and dial again using 1 + area code + telephone number. Equipment programmed to complete seven-digit local calls such as fax machines, dial-up internet numbers, voicemail and security gates, will need to be reprogrammed to complete calls to 10
