Felon accused of stabbing two on New Year’s to stand trial

MURRIETA (CNS) - A convicted felon accused of stabbing two men during an unprovoked attack on New Year's Day near a Lake Elsinore intersection must stand trial for attempted murder and other charges, a judge ruled today. Andrew Ernest Avila, 29, of Lake Elsinore allegedly committed the assault near Lakeshore Drive and Spring Street last Jan. 1. Following a preliminary hearing at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta, Riverside County Superior Court Judge F. Paul Dickerson found there was sufficient evidence to warrant a trial on two counts of attempted murder and one count of mayhem, along with sentence-enhancing deadly weapon and great bodily injury allegations.
