Begin with a look at Juan himself. Juan Murrieta, a Spaniard and an eventual notable lawman, should not be confused with the legendary Mexican villain Joaquin Murietta. Juan Murrieta and his brother Ezequiel left their home in Santurce, in the Basque region of Spain when Juan was 17 years old to make their way to California.
