AMA backs update to CDC opioid prescribing guidelines

CHICAGO – The American Medical Association urged advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Injury Center to recommend an overhaul of the CDC’s guidelines on opioid prescriptions for patients with pain. The AMA comments mirrored those of the Opioid Workgroup, which was established for the purpose of reviewing draft revisions to the CDC’s 2016 guideline for prescribing opioids. The resulting Opioid Workgroup report, available online at, outlined the foreseeable misapplication of the guidelines and pointed to more productive ways to move forward.
