— MURRIETA (Bear Creek Golf Club) – On Monday, May 9, Murrieta’s Bear Creek Golf Club hosted the CIF-SS Central Region individual qualifier where several Valley locals advanced to stage two of the CIF-State individual qualifying round at River Ridge in Oxnard Thursday, May 19.
Great Oak’s Ryan Abuan, the Southwestern League MVP, earned site medalist honors with a round of one under par 71 from a combination course that played to a length of 6,701 yards and a par of 72. Abuan was the only golfer to finish with a score under par. Fellow Wolfpack golfer, Nathan Sampson, was three shots off his teammate’s winning score with a +2 round of 74.
Also advancing to River Ridge in Oxnard was Hemet’s Alvaro Fonseca who matched Sampson with a T3 finish and score of 74 (+2).
Four other Southwestern League players, an Ivy League player, and Ambassador League player also moved on. Jaden Huggins (Vista Murrieta) posted +3 (75), Nixon Lauritzen (Temescal Canyon) +4 (76), Chayce Frye (Chaparral) +5 (77), Dominic Tavarette (Murrieta Valley) +7 (79), and Daniel Guerra (Linfield Christian) had a +7 (79).
Tavarette and Guerra had to advance in a six for three playoff that involved spots 18-20 as exactly 20 players advance to each site. California Lutheran’s Ronny Zheng was in that playoff but fell short and is listed as the second alternate should someone pull out of the second stage.
Just missing the playoff was Santa Rosa Academy golfer Jason Bustos who shot a +8 round of 80.
