Gavin Newsom’s office Thursday, July 14, announced millions in funding to be committed to a gun violence prevention outreach campaign, which includes $1 million to the San Diego City Attorney’s Office to fund education and training on the use of gun violence restraining orders.The funding is part of an initiative announced earlier this year focused on outreach and education regarding the state’s red flag laws, which allow for the issuance of gun violence restraining orders to temporarily remove  firearms from those at risk of harming themselves or others.The governor’s office said more than 3,000 gun violence restraining orders were issued across the state between 2016 and 2020.
