When you’re going to climb up a ladder, you can’t start at the top. You must start with the first rung and move up from there.That’s why Jesus started teaching the Beatitudes by saying, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,” in Matthew 5:3.What exactly does it mean to be “poor in spirit?” Especially when our mind doesn’t consider being poor at anything a blessing.To be “poor in spirit” means you understand and admit you are spiritually dead and bankrupt and in desperate need of the grace of God.To best understand this concept, we should look at the story Jesus told to a group of people who were full of themselves.“To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this
