New research finds differences and similarities in Pacific Mastodons from WSC paleontologists

Western Science Center paleontologist Dr. Alton C. Dooley has announced in a new publication that Ice Age mastodons from the United States are different from those in Canada, though they share some similarities.The research, conducted through the Western Science Center in Hemet in collaboration with other paleontologists, is detailed in the paper “Re-evaluation of mastodon material from Oregon and Washington, USA, Alberta, Canada, and Hidalgo and Jalisco, Mexico.” The paper is now published in the open-access scientific journal PeerJ.In 2019, Dr. Dooley led a study that designated the Pacific mastodon (Mammut pacificus) as a separate species from the American mastodon (Mammut americanum).
