PAUMA VALLEY — A fatal crash shut down both directions of state Route 76 and Cole Grade Road Friday afternoon, creating major traffic disruptions as authorities conducted an investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported around 12:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the intersection of SR-76 and Cole Grade Road. CHP confirmed at least one person was killed. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, and details on the cause of the collision remain under investigation.

By 12:44 p.m., officers ordered a full closure of Cole Grade Road and SR-76 in both directions near the crash site. CHP logs indicated traffic quickly backed up, with delays stretching to Pala Reservation Road. North County Fire Protection District crews responded to the scene, and Caltrans assisted with traffic control.

Authorities said the roads would remain closed for several hours while CHP’s investigation continues. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
