A pedestrian was struck and killed late Friday nigh, just after midnight, on State Route 74 near Melba Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported about 12:26 a.m. Saturday on eastbound SR-74, just west of Melba Avenue. Initial reports indicated that a vehicle swerved to avoid a person walking in the roadway, but the pedestrian was hit by another vehicle and died at the scene.

Several vehicles pulled over following the collision, and all eastbound lanes were temporarily shut down while authorities investigated, CHP logs show.

Fire crews from Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department were called to the scene, and CHP officers from the Temecula area office handled the investigation. The pedestrian’s identity was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin.

The road was reopened some time afterwards.
