Late-night crash in Lake Elsinore ignites vehicle fire; driver hospitalized

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — A driver was transported to a local hospital following a fiery collision involving a parked vehicle in Lake Elsinore late Saturday night.

Authorities received reports of the crash at 11:56 p.m. in the 2900 block of Sandpiper Drive. Preliminary investigation indicates a white Mercedes-Benz collided with a parked pickup truck. Following the impact, both the sedan and the pickup truck caught fire.

According to reports from the scene, the driver of the Mercedes was able to self-extricate from the vehicle before the flames spread. They were subsequently treated by American Medical Response (AMR) personnel and transported to a hospital with injuries of unknown severity.

Emergency crews from the Riverside County Fire Department—specifically Engine 85 serving Lake Elsinore and Engine 11 serving Lakeland Village—responded to extinguish the blaze. Steve’s Towing also responded to assist with clearing the wreckage.

Authorities are investigating whether the driver was under the influence of nitrous oxide, a substance also known as “Galaxy Gas” or “whippits,” at the time of the crash. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

Sandpiper Drive was closed to through traffic while Sheriff’s deputies conducted their investigation and fire crews worked to ensure the scene was safe. Residents were advised to avoid the area.
