PALOMAR MOUNTAIN, Calif. — Fire crews with the Palomar Ranger District are conducting a prescribed burn operation today, Feb. 12, at the Fry Creek Campground.

The 43-acre “broadcast burn” is intended to reduce hazardous fuels in the area, according to the Cleveland National Forest. Residents and visitors in the vicinity of Palomar Mountain should expect to see smoke throughout the day.

Unlike pile burning, where debris is stacked and ignited, a broadcast burn involves the controlled application of low-intensity fire across a specific landscape. This method is used to consume ground litter—such as dry leaves, pine needles, and brush—helping to lower the risk of high-intensity wildfires in the future.

The Fry Creek Campground is located within the Cleveland National Forest, known for its dense stands of pine and fir trees.

Officials have not announced road closures but advise motorists to exercise caution if smoke drifts across roadways.
