Current team nickname changes are just the beginning

The National Football League team in Washington dropped the nickname “Redskins” while the Major League Baseball team in Cleveland will be discarding the nickname “Indians.” The changing of nicknames in professional sports likely won’t be limited to those. Calling an Indian a “redskin” is like calling a red-haired person a “ginger;” it’s slang but not necessarily derogatory. Calling the pro sports teams, the Washington Gingers and the Cleveland Gingers would solve the problem of Indians being offended. If the Indian mascots were replaced by ginger mascots, red-haired people would be no more offended than they are now with the red-haired mascot for Wendy’s, and since the Native American activists don’t desire to be represented as team mascots, there should be no co
