Conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was fatally shot Wednesday during a speaking appearance at Utah Valley University, law enforcement officials confirmed.
The 31-year-old was addressing a crowd around 12:10 p.m. MDT on the first stop of his “American Comeback Tour” when a single gunshot struck him in the neck, according to university officials and eyewitness accounts. The bullet appeared to come from a building approximately 200 yards away, identified as the Losee Center rooftop. Video from the scene captured Kirk recoiling mid-sentence as blood appeared visible on his neck, and panic ensued among attendees.
Initial reports suggested a suspect had been detained; however, university spokespersons later clarified that no one currently remains in custody. The investigation is ongoing, with the FBI and ATF assisting on the scene.
Following the shooting, UVU closed its campus, canceled classes and issued an emergency shelter-in-place order until police could safely clear the area.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said, “Once again a bullet has silenced the most eloquent truth teller of an era. My dear friend Charlie Kirk was our country’s relentless and courageous crusader for free speech. We pray for Erika and the children. Charlie is already in paradise with the angels. We ask his prayers for our country.” X
President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death around 2:40 p.m. EDT (12:40 p.m. MDT) in a post on Truth Social, calling him “great” and “legendary.” He also ordered U.S. flags be flown at half-staff in Kirk’s honor.
Kirk, widely recognized for his confrontational and populist brand of conservatism, had become an influential voice among young Republicans through podcasts, social media, and campus tours. His death adds to a troubling wave of politically motivated violence in the U.S. in recent years.
Local Pastor Tim Thompson of 4:12 church who has hosted Charlie Kirk at his church wrote, “Heartbroken to hear of the passing of a friend, Charlie Kirk. He was a bold voice for truth, faith, and freedom. His love for God and this country inspired millions. Please join me in praying for his family and all who mourn this tremendous loss. Until we meet again, brother.”
